Candy AI character setup: separate the companion, your persona and the scene

Plan a Candy AI character with an original worksheet, distinguish Create Character from your persona, and evaluate the opening before spending more tokens.

A clearer Candy AI setup starts by separating three things: the companion you are creating, the identity you use in conversation and the situation happening now. Mixing all three into one long biography can make the opening harder to direct. This guide gives you a compact planning worksheet and a way to evaluate the result.

Provider pages were checked September 15, 2026. The worksheet is our original example for fictional adult characters. It is not a transcript of a paid-account test, and it does not assume every account exposes the same controls.

Candy AI character creation versus your user persona

The public Create Character page begins with a visual style choice, including Realistic and Anime. The separate Create Your Persona help article describes settings under My Profile → Settings for how you are represented across conversations, with some fields reserved for Premium Plus.

Your companion’s role belongs in its character design. Your own fictional role belongs in your persona or the opening context. A temporary event, such as missing a train, belongs in the scene. This distinction makes it easier to change one part without rewriting the entire relationship.

Write a five-line Candy AI companion brief

Before opening additional creation controls, write a version you can explain in five lines. This is an editorial planning aid, not a list of guaranteed Candy fields.

  1. Identity: name, adult age and one relevant role.
  2. Temperament: two compatible traits with observable behavior.
  3. Voice: how the character speaks when solving a problem.
  4. Interest: one subject that can generate conversation.
  5. Boundary of control: the character leaves your decisions and dialogue to you.

For Mara, “patient and observant” becomes “asks one clarifying question before offering a solution.” That is easier to evaluate than a string of flattering adjectives. Give the character a small tension, too: she enjoys detail but dislikes unnecessary fuss. That can produce a recognizable voice without turning the biography into a novel.

Character customization: appearance and image-generation costs

Pick a visual direction and a few stable identifying details. You do not need a perfect portrait to find out whether a conversation premise works. Keep any media spending separate from the task of writing a usable character.

Candy’s token help page lists custom AI creation among token uses. Check the actual charge shown before confirming a creation or regeneration. Opening a builder is not proof that every step is free.

Use an attempt ceiling. For example, decide that you will assess the first acceptable portrait before requesting another. “Acceptable” should mean it supports your intended character, not that it wins a beauty contest against every image in the gallery. If a specific detail is wrong, note that detail before changing the setup.

Candy AI persona setup: add only useful context

The Persona documentation describes fields such as name, role, hobbies and appearance. Supply only context relevant to the conversations you want. A fictional role can be enough; you do not need to share your real workplace, address or other sensitive details to evaluate the service.

Keep your persona internally consistent. If Alex is a beginner gardener, do not also describe Alex as an expert who needs no explanation. Decide which version should guide the conversation. Check whether the persona is active before expecting it to influence a chat, and remember that a saved setting is not proof the model will use it correctly.

Start your AI character chat with an unresolved decision

Here is an original opening for the example, written as a neutral fictional scene:

The exhibition opens tomorrow. Two botanical labels are in the wrong envelopes, and the printer has already closed. I show Mara the sketches and ask which label we should verify first. I want to solve one problem at a time.

The opening gives the character a task, a constraint and a place for your next turn. It does not require the model to invent the whole situation. Avoid beginning with a biography dump followed by “start”; that leaves more uncertainty about the kind of response you want.

Evaluate the first few exchanges

Check whether the reply addresses the labels, uses Mara’s observant style and leaves a decision for Alex. Then introduce one new fact: one sketch is unfinished. See whether the next answer incorporates that fact.

If the conversation feels wrong, identify the layer responsible. An unsuitable voice suggests changing the character brief. Confusion about your role suggests checking the persona or opening. Forgetting what just happened suggests clarifying the current scene. Changing every layer together makes it harder to learn what helped.

Maintain your Candy AI character setup and revision notes

Save the short brief, the change you made and one observation about the result. Keep this outside the service so it remains useful if you revise or recreate the character. Do not label a suggested method as a proven memory fix; evaluate the actual answers.

For plan details, use the Candy AI review. For longer-term continuity, read the memory guide. The companion buying guide helps decide whether your remaining problem is setup or whether another product is a better fit.

Candy AI character setup questions

Does the same brief work for an AI girlfriend or another companion?

The structure can be adapted to either fictional role: identity, behavior, voice and a clear relationship. Choose the relationship you actually want to play and keep both characters adults. A virtual character’s appearance alone does not explain how a conversation should develop.

Are all Persona fields available in every tier?

No. The linked help article specifically marks bio, relationship and intimacy fields as Premium Plus-only. Check the fields your account exposes rather than assuming the whole Persona feature has one universal entitlement. The platform’s character builder and your user persona solve different setup tasks.
